Baltimore, MD (April 26, 2016) – The Mullan Contracting Company captured an “Excellence in Construction” award from the Baltimore Chapter of the Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC), for completing a 5,800 square foot new building addition for St. Mary Antiochian Orthodox Church in Hunt Valley. Sanders Designs, based in Cockeysville, was the architect for the project located at 909 Shawan Road.
ABC sponsors the program each year to recognize both general and sub-contractors for outstanding work in various categories based on the type of the project.
The project scope was highlighted by the placement of a five-ton, nearly 40-foot wide gold dome. The addition to the Orthodox Church was designed to reflect an ancient Byzantine style of architecture. The exterior of the building consists of EIFS and stone, with the interior accented by towering spires and iconography. The project team carefully integrated the new construction to blend seamlessly with the existing church, which has been operational in Baltimore County for more than two decades.
“St. Mary Antiochian Orthodox Church features excellent roadside visibility from Shawan Road, so it was extremely important to design and construct a classic addition that reflects the extremely high values of the congregation,” explained Joseph Rode, President of The Mullan Contracting Company.
“The most significant challenge of the project was the precise installation of the 10,000 pound dome, which required a custom-designed rigging apparatus to prevent the fiberglass structure from becoming egg-shaped. It required a full day to execute the installation strategy.”
