Baltimore, MD (March 15, 2015) – The Mullan Contracting Company captured an “Excellence in Construction” award from the Baltimore Chapter of the Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC), for the construction of a 7,766 square foot Student Commons building addition to The Boys’ Latin School of Maryland. Located on Lake Avenue in Baltimore, Boys’ Latin is the oldest independent, nonsectarian college-preparatory school for boys in Maryland. The all-boys educational institution was founded in 1844 and serves 600 students from kindergarten through twelfth grade.
ABC sponsors the program each year to recognize both general and sub-contractors for outstanding work in various categories based on the type of the project. Rubeling & Associates based in Towson, performed architectural and design services for this project.
Connected to Smith Hall, the new addition features generous windows allowing the flow of natural lighting to enter the dining facility and an “eyebrow” roof line that complements the distinctive architecture elements of the existing buildings. The use of brick was incorporated around the kitchen exterior to match the design of Smith Hall.
“The Charles T. Bauer Student Commons, BL’s new dining facility and campus center, has already delivered on the promise of forging a stronger school community. Through daily practice of being together, our students have deepened relationships with one another and with faculty members. Moreover, the space has provided opportunities for informal interactions across all divisions, reinforcing that connectedness of being one school,” said Headmaster Christopher J. Post. “It’s spacious,” and “the view is beautiful,” said Glen and Caleb, both fifth-grade students.
“Mullan Construction has been extremely active in the construction or renovation of facilities serving educational institutions, and our deep experience has enabled us to establish safety protocols that address the diverse audiences interacting in these settings,” explained Joseph Rode, President of The Mullan Contracting Company. “This thoughtfully-designed and flexible building addresses the school’s long-term dining and special event needs.”
